Phylogeny of the shanny, Lipophrys pholis, from the NE Atlantic using mitochondrial DNA markers.

چکیده
The distribution of the shanny includes the NE Atlantic from Norway to Mauritania and the Atlantic islands, with some records in the Western Mediterranean. Although several studies have been carried out on the morphology (Arruda, 1979; Bath, 1976; Lowe, 1843), ecology (Faria and Almada, 2001; Almada and Faria, 2000), ontogeny (Faria et al., 2002), and its diet composition (Maze et al., 1999) not much has been done on the genetics (Guillemaud et al., 2000). Some authors have drawn attention to morphological diVerences between Lipophrys pholis of the European continental coasts and the Atlantic islands. One of the Wrst studies to propose subspeciation in L. pholis is Arruda (1979) who identiWes unique features for the Azorean shanny. This observation led Zander (1980) to propose a model of re-colonisation of blennies for the Mediterranean after the Messinian crisis (Hsü et al., 1973). Zander suggests that as the temperature and sea level decreased, those Mediterranean blennies moved towards Atlantic islands. One of these blennies could have been an ancestor of L. trigloides which probably gave rise to an ancestor similar to L. pholis. At the end of the glaciation, this “new” species invaded the African and then the European coasts. Finally, Zander justiWes the disjunct distribution of the shanny by diVerences in competition

Genetic structure and historical demography of the shanny Lipophrys pholis in the Portuguese coast based on mitochondrial DNA analysis.
The shanny Lipophrys pholis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Pisces: Blenniidae) is a rocky intertidal resident Wsh whose distribution comprises a large coastal region in Northeastern Atlantic, limited by Norway, Mauritania, and the Azores Islands (Zander, 1986). L. pholis has demersal eggs guarded by the males (Almada et al., 1992) that hatch after 16 days with 5.0 mm total length at a temperature of 17 °C (...
متن کاملMitochondrial DNA sequence-based phylogenetic relationship of Trichiurus lepturus (Perciformes: Trichiuridae) from the Persian Gulf
In this study, mitochondrial DNA analysis using 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was performed to investigate the phylogeny relationship of Trichiurus lepturus in the Persian Gulf compared to the other investigated area. The amplification of 16S rDNA resulted in a product of 600 bp in all samples. The results showed that the isolated strain belongs to T. lepturus showing 42 divergence sites among the s...

Phylogenetic relationships among all described species (total of 5 taxa) of the shrimp genus Penaeus, were examined with nucleotide sequence data from portions of mitochondrial gene and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). There are twelve commercial shrimp in the Iranian coastal waters. The reconstruction of the evolution phylogeny of these species is crucial in revealing stock identity that ca...

متن کاملAnalysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences of Turcinoemacheilus genus (Nemacheilidae Cypriniformes) in Iran
Members of Nemacheilidae Family, Turcinoemacheilus genus were subjected to molecular phylogenetic analysis in this study. This genus was reported in 2009 to inhabit in Karoon River drainage, in contrary to previous assumption that it was the endemic species in the Basin of Tigris River. It was sampled from three stations placed in different tributaries in Karoon drainage and evaluated to unders...
